THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and foreign minister Sushma Swaraj urging to take effective steps to ensure the Indians who are working in Qatar.
He said that there are 6.5 lakh Indians in Qatar and of which three lakhs are Keralites. With the countries in the middle-east cutting off diplomatic ties with Qatar, the chief minister said the Indians working there are more concerned.
It is learnt that the countries have also cancelled all the flights to the country. Hence the Centre should take urgent steps to ensure protection of the Indian there and necessary instructions should be given to the embassy in Doha, said the chief minister.
Meanwhile, the NORAK ROOTS have made it clear that there was no need for panic since no restrictions have been imposed on Qatar so far. ``The only worry will be that the flight services have been cancelled by four countries to Qatar. Otherwise the people especially the Indians working there will have no trouble,'' said B Gopakumaran Nair, general manager, NORKA.
He said that so far Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrian and Egypt have asked all the Qatar nationals to move out from their countries. They have also cancelled the flights to and from Qatar. Hence if there are any Indians working under Qatar nationals as their sponsors, they will be having trouble. Otherwise the people in Qatar are safe.
Being the month of Ramzan, the people at Qatar are worried that the new developments will escalate the prices of essential commodities. Qatar is highly depended on Saudi Arabia for essential commodities and hence this would be affecting the supply of it.
The NORKA officials said that the developments in the middle-east countries are being closely watched and if there is any need to interfere then it would seek the support of the Centre. ``At present there is no need for any panic as the situation is safe for the Indians there,'' said the general manager.
