Students, parents on edge as confusion lingers
over NEET

Five days after the undergraduate NEET 2017 results were announced, students and parents are still on tenterhooks as the state government is yet to receive any data including the rank list, pass percentage, language-wise list or board-wise list from the CBSE.The CBSE's category-wise data will suggest if Tamil Nadu's new 85:15 reservation policy for state and CBSE students in MBBSBDS admissions is justified. Legal experts have criticised the government for framing the policy without the numbers to back it. Health minister C Vijaya Baskar said since 4,675 students from CBSE took biology in Class XII compared to 4.2 lakh students from the state board, the government decided to reserve 85% of seats for state board students.
But legal experts like former Madras high court jud ge Justice K Chandru say the health minister's assumption on the number violates the constitution, which prescribes equality . “To introduce discriminatory provisions, there should be extraordinary reasons. We have none,“ Chandru said. Many parents and studies are now planning to move court.
The suspense is likely to continue for a while as CBSE officials in Delhi said the data will be sent to the ministry of health, who will then have to hand it over to individual state governments. Officials said there is a delay because they are short-staffed. “Specific board-wise data would take time to be released,“ the official said.
Meanwhile, the regional CBSE office in Chennai said that the numbers have not been shared even with their officers.
“We have been told that the data will be sent directly to the states, without using CBSE regional offices as a nodal point,“ said regional officer, Mahesh D Dharmadhikari Several students are anxiously awaiting the data to gauge whether they would make it to the preferred colleges. “We would like to know how many candidates are there between the 300 to 400 range category too. This will give us an idea of what to expect and whether the students can qualify for admissions in certain colleges,“ said S Vijay , a parent, whose son is aspiring to join MBBS.
