Court orders Rs. 1.78 cr. to accident victims
A Special District Court for MCOP cases here on Thursday ordered the
Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Salem Region, to pay a
compensation of Rs. 1.78 crore to 62 persons, including the families of
30 deceased, in connection with an accident involving a TNSTC bus and a
lorry near Sankagiri way back in 2001.
According to the prosecution, the bus carrying 70 passengers collided with the lorry on April 4, 2001. Thirty passengers were charred to death, while 35 others suffered injuries.
P. Balasubramaniam, Special District Judge directed the TNSTC to pay the compensation to 32 injured and the families of the 30 deceased.
The petitions of three persons were dismissed as they did not pursue the case.
The Judge directed the TNSTC to pay the compensation with seven per cent interest from the date of filing of the case till the amount was paid.
The compensation awarded for each family/person ranged from Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 16.17 lakh.
The maximum compensation of Rs. 16.17 lakh was awarded to the family of Govindan, a school headmaster of Uthayampalayam village.
