Police have arrested a
48-year-old man from Gujarat for cheating an owner of a private medical
college of `7.5 crore by promising to remove the college's name from the
Medical Council of India (MCI) blacklist. Yogesh Kumar Gupta, of
Ahmedabad, convinced Murugesan, the owner of Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Medical
College on ECR that he had clout with senior officials in MCI as well
as top politicians at the Centre.
“Gupta had been operating a medical shop in Ahmedabad,“ a police officer said. “When Murugesan met him, Gupta claimed to have spoken to some contacts in the Prime Minister's Office and said he could get MCI to strike the college off its blacklist by speaking to some BJP leaders.“
Gupta struck a deal for `15 crore to restore recognition to the college that MCI had blacklisted in 2014. He demanded 50% un front, which Murugesan paid in five instalments.
Gupta stopped answering Murugesan's calls after this. He even threatened Murugesan, saying he could expose his possession of black money by having his house raided by the income tax department.
Murugesan approached Kancheepuram SP Santhosh Haidmeni and the district crime branch started a probe.
District crime branch sleuths on Thursday arrested Gupta in Ahmedabad with the help of the Gujarat police. They brought him to Chennai on Friday and a court remanded him in jail.
