(MADURAI: The Maduraibench of the Madras high court on Friday dismissed a public interest litigation filed against the hike in the salaries of MLAs in Tamil Nadu from Rs 55,000 to Rs 1.05 lakh.
The PIL filed by K K Ramesh of Madurai came up for admission before the division bench of justices KK Sasidharan and GR Swaminathan.
The petitioner said lakhs of agriculturists have lost their livelihoods due to monsoon failure last year. They were unable to repay their debts, and the government had not helped them properly, he said.
He also said, "Since expenditure is higher than the income in the state, many departments, including electricity and transport, have been affected. The government has a debt of Rs 45,119 crore. In these circumstances, the hike in salaries and allowances of MLAs is not acceptable, which is against the welfare state and economy."
A representation was sent to the principal secretary, state's chief secretary, finance secretary and Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly secretary on July 21. But there was no response from them, he said.
Dismissing the petition, the court said there was no proof to substantiate the petitioner's claim and also that the court could not intervene in the business of the assembly.
