37 snakes captured from residential area in Madurai city

MADURAI: As many as 37 snakes were captured in a span of two hours from a residential area in the heart of Madurai city on Tuesday.

It all started when the residents saw two snakes at a parking lot at the North Masi Street-West Masi Street junction on Tuesday morning. The panicked residents alerted snake-catchers. And three snake-catchers rushed to the spot.

As the residents stood in disbelief, the snake-catchers started capturing rat snakes -- one snake after another - from small holes on the parking lot and from cracks on a dilapidated building, which was once a movie theatre.

Each snake had an average length of six feet.

They went on capturing the snakes with their hands, and whenever they exhibited the snakes holding them in their hands, the residents stepped back in fear.

In two hours, 37 snakes were in their sacks!

"It's hard to believe that a large number of snakes lived here," said R Divya, a resident.

The snake-catchers demanded Rs 250 for each snake they caught. The residents had no issue in paying whatever they demanded. But what they were concerned about was the slithering realization that two snakes had escaped after being caught! The residents feared that the snakes would come back and bite them.

However, snake experts allayed their fears saying that rat snakes were harmless.
