AIPMT re-test: Medical aspirants in TN confused over admission options

CHENNAI: With CBSE announcing re-exam of All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) on July 25, medical aspirants in Tamil Nadu are confused over their admission options. While the re-test could be a blessing for many who could not do well in their first attempt, others are worried.

More than six lakh AIPMT candidates have registered to compete for 3,000-odd seats across the country. Many have applied for engineering seats as a fallback option. AIPMT candidate Jagani Vashan says "I did well in the first attempt, and was hoping to apply to medical colleges, but since it is a competitive test, I need to keep other options open. Engineering colleges are demanding 1.5 lakh for the first semester and we will lose the money if we have to withdraw the seat later."

Many students were worried that medical colleges elsewhere start admission by August, and they may lose out academically as they will have to wait for their results originally scheduled for June 5. Ashish Pratik, another candidate, said he was hoping for the exam would be held in June. "It becomes a long break for us and it's a little hard to motivate oneself to prepare a second time," he said.

Students as well as academicians felt that it was tough on medical aspirants in Tamil Nadu with no other entrance options like CET or Comed-K. This year's Class 12 pass-outs in TN are already challenged by the previous year's applicants who now have an advantage because of easier exams last year. The issue is in court. Around 15% of medical seats in the state are reserved for AIPMT candidates.

Coaching experts feel positivity is the need of the hour for AIPMT candidates in light of the re-exam. "Any re-exam is a strain, but if this is not carried out, then there would be disparity at the entrance level. Students should not worry about the paper pattern, and give it their best shot. We too are concerned that students should not lose out academically due to delay in admission," said Akash Educational Services Chennai head Jean John.
