CHENNAI: With the Medical Council of India (MCI) continuing to refuse approval of five self-financing medical colleges citing infrastructure defects and shortage of teaching faculty, the wait for more MBBS seats under government quota continues.
Speaking to Express, Dr C V Bhirmanandam, vice-president, MCI, said approval was denied to all the five colleges because of infrastructure deficiencies and shortage of teaching faculty. “They did not satisfy MCI norms, and there were many flaws in the operation of these colleges. So MCI denied approval for 2015-2016, too. The message was conveyed to the official from the Directorate of Medical Education during a meeting that was held on Tuesday,” he added.
A senior official in the Directorate of Medical Education told Express that they were not expecting these seats to receive the sanction this year. “These colleges had applied last year but then too, failed to get recognition. So we were not actually expecting these seats for this academic year as well,” the official said.
Had these been cleared, there would have been an additional 97 seats each from SRM Medical College, Annapoorna Medical College and Hospital, and Melmaruvathur Adiparasakthi Institute Medical Science and Research, and 75 each from Madha Medical College and Hospital and Sri Muthukumaran Medical College under government quota.
The current batch of students are already battling seat allotment with the previous batch of Plus Two candidates. The second phase of counselling for self-financing colleges will be conducted on July 25 and the third phase on September 30 as per the Supreme Court order.
Meanwhile, the fate of ESIC Medical College in Chennai is yet to be decided.
