Ruckus at NET exam as late candidates are kept out in Nagpur

NAGPUR: The National Eligibility Test (NET), a mandatory requirement for those seeking employment in colleges as lecturers, was held on Sunday. This important test is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on behalf of University Grants Commission (UGC). Nagpur was one of the 89 cities across the country where NET was conducted.

Not all who registered for the exam in Nagpur were able to appear though, which caused some ruckus at a centre. A few candidates told TOI that they were not allowed inside the exam hall even though they were "just a bit late". One female candidate from Wardha said, "The exam was to start at 9.30am and I reached at 9.35am. The auto driver took a lot of time to reach the centre and also my train from Wardha was a bit late. They should have let us in rather than waste our entire year." As per the NET website and a notification issued just a week ago, students have to report well in advance for the exam.

There were three papers with different marks and time duration. The first exam was of 100 marks in which 60 questions (50 mandatory) were to be solved in 45 minutes. In the second session/exam there were 50 questions which were to be solved in the same time frame and carried 100 marks. The third paper was the longest and had 75 questions worth 150 marks to be solved in 2.5 hours.

NET is held to determine eligibility for college and university level lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for entrants in the teaching profession and research. The candidates who qualify are eligible to pursue research in subject of their specialization in a related subject and are also eligible for post of assistant professor. The JRF awardees have the opportunity to pursue whole time research work in government universities, institutions, IITs and other national organizations.
