Pension not paid, adalat stops salary of entire dept

BAREILLY: Non-payment of pension to a retired employee proved costly for staff and officials of deputy director, agriculture department, Shahjahanpur as the divisional pension adalat ordered withholding of salary of the entire office for this month as punishment. Besides officials and staff of 10 other departments were also penalized by the adalat for delay in disposing of pension cases of retired employees.

According to reports, the pension adalat was organized on Wednesday at the commissionery under the chairmanship of divisional commissioner to listen and address the grievance of pensioners from Bareily, Badaun, Shahjahanpur and Pilibhit.

During the adalat, a retired employee of the agriculture department, Siya Ram Verma, complained that he has not been paid pension despite retiring from service in 2012. The employees at the office of deputy director, agriculture had made him run from pillar to post but did not release his pension. For a brief period of one year, the department had paid him interim pension but for the last two years, held back his pension due to reasons best known to them, said additional commissioner Prabhat Kumar Sharma.

The additional commissioner said after the matter was brought to his notice, "we ordered withholding payment of salary of the entire office staff for the current month which would only be released after they dispose of the complaint expeditiously".

Besides the presiding officers of the adalat also sought an explanation from chief medical officer (CMO) for delay in payment of pension to a former employee

Similarly, the salary of another official of Meergunj tehsil was stopped for failing to release the family pension of a widow who brought the matter to the notice of officials.

A total of 11 complaints were received out of which eight were disposed of on the spot while in the remaining three cases, orders were issued to officials concerned. The coordinator of the adalat is additional director, treasury.

Divisional commissioner, Pramanshu said "the pension adalat is a pro pensioner initiative aimed at ending red tapism in the government departments and is an effort to settle the outstanding claims of pensioners without making them run from one place to another.It is organised every three months.
