Medical colleges in MP get nod to start PhD courses

INDORE: Medical colleges of state, including Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGM) will be able to start PhD course in clinical branches of medicine from this academic year.

Coordination committee of higher education departrment -- apex regulatory body -- has given nod to recommendations forwarded by Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV). Following the approval, rules will come into effect for all medical colleges of state.

Varsity executive council, standing committee, Bhopal, has also approved regulation of PhD course in different clinical faculties and it was decided to follow Medical Council of India (MCI) regulations clearingordinanceconstraints. So far, in MGM PhD in community medicine is being offered as it had only one PhD holder who met mandatory guidelines for the course as per University Grants Commission (UGC). DAVV had permitted the college to conduct PhD course three years ago as it fit the criteria.

"Changes were made in the ordinance, which were approved by coordination committee.

The changes will be applicable for all state universities, now. With this, medical colleges will be able to start PhD course in clinical branches. MCI regulations will come into effect instead of UGC. However, PhD candidates will have to undergo screening test and also do course work as per UGC guidelines," said an official.

Amendment will also pave way for state universities to hold entrance test for PhD aspirants in medical sciences. "We will hold two-hour entrance examination for entry to PhD aspirants. It will comprise 100 questions and 50% will be passing marks," said Prof Ganesh Kawadia, who was one of the members of the committee to decide on MGM application to run a PhD course. Earlier, DAVV had turned down request of MGM when it submitted a letter issued by MCI which permits it to run doctoral courses. Varsity had constituted a committee to inspect facilities and infrastructure to run PhD courses but it found that its ordinance does not allow the college to run PhD course.
