Tamil Nadu medical body feud puts 5,000 doctor licences under cloud

CHENNAI: The legal validity of medical registration certificates — the licence to practise — issued to more than 5,000 doctors in the state since April is now under scrutiny.

Infighting and power struggle within the Tamil Nadu medical council, a statutory bodythat issues the certificates, has led to allegations that the doctor who affixed his signature on the certificates as president is not duly elected and the man who signed as registrar has not been attending work.

For more than six months, the seven elected members of the 10-member council have been fighting a series of legal battles over who should be president.

The council's term is to end by June 19, but the five-member committee on June 5 resolved to extend it.
