Twist in MBBS seat row as I-T to probe Chennai bribe giver’s assets
CHENNAI: A woman of Madhavaram, who lodged a complaint against another woman at Paruthipattu near Chennai alleging that the latter had neither procured a medical seat to her, as promised, nor returned Rs 18 lakh given as bribe for the same, is now in trouble.
Selvi should now declare the source of the huge sum. The police must ascertain as to how the complainant was able to part with the huge sum for getting a medical seat. The one who receives bribe alone cannot be punished.
To put an end to this offence, the Income Tax Department process should be set in motion, so that they will probe the assets and liabilities of such offenders and ascertain their assets from which they have paid the bribe, Justice S Vaidyanathan said.
The judge was on Thursday dismissing an anticipatory bail application from Anubakkya (31), who feared arrest at the hands of Manali police. The judge directed the Registry to furnish a copy of the court order to the Commissioner of Income Tax at Nungambakkam, to enable him to act in the matter and ascertain the truth or otherwise of the case, so as to bring the culprits to book.
The case of the prosecution is that Anubakkya along with two other accused allegedly received Rs 18 lakh from the complainant on the promise of getting her an MBBS seat. They, however, neither obtained the seat nor returned the money they had received. It is the petitioner’s case that she is innocent and she has been falsely implicated in the case.
