Two extreme cases of rape in a day sends shockwaves in Madurai

MADURAI: Two shocking cases of rape were reported in this district on Wednesday.
While an eight-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 70-year-old retired TNSTC driver in Melur, a 90-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a 36-year-old man in Usilampatti.
Police sources said, the 8-year-old victim, a resident of Melur, was playing near the retired driver’s house along with her friends when the incident happened on Tuesday.
While she was playing, the retired driver, Karuppaih, invited her to his house before allegedly sexually assaulting her. Hearing the girl’s cries, a woman in the neighbourhood ran to her rescue and saved her from the clutches of the man.
According to police, the girl’s mother admitted her to the Government Hospital in Melur for medical treatment and filed a complaint at the police station on Tuesday itself
On Wednesday, the police arrested Karuppaih under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act).
In another shocking incident, a 90-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a 36-year-old man during late in the night on Wednesday at Usilampatti.
The accused has been identified as Murugan, a load man and a resident of Usilampatti. Sources said, Murugan, who was drunk at the time, raped the widow while she was fast asleep in her patio.
Since the woman sustained injuries, she was admitted to Government Hospital in Usilampatti on Wednesday for treatment.
