Passport: verification by police to be easy

Proposal to provide hand-held devices

To reduce the time taken in police verification of passport applications, a proposal has been made to use hand held devices for the purpose at the doorsteps of the applicants.
The scheme will be implemented in five police stations at first to familiarise the personnel, and subsequently at all the 1,500 police stations. At present, a print out is taken and sent to the Commissioner of Police office or the office of the Superintendent of Police from where it is sent to respective police stations for verification. This process takes about a minimum of 12 to 20 days. If the verification is done within 30 days and a report is sent to the Passport Office, the Ministry of External Affairs provides a compensation of Rs. 100 for an application.
Some of the States like Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Bihar are using tablet computers for police verification and thereby reduced the time taken to just two days, said S. Sasikumar, Passport Officer, Coimbatore.
Coimbatore Passport Office gets around 800 applications a day on an average and closer to 10,000 applications a month.
If tablets are introduced, the Commissioner of Police, or the office of the Superintendent of Police can send them online to the police officer concerned directly.
The verification could be done within one or two days and a report too can be send online.
This will make the entire process paperless, details can be stored in e-format.
