Centre seeks report on violence, doctors’ protest from Bengal govt
Governor Again Urges Mamata To Break Impasse With Doctors

New Delhi/Kolkata:

The Centre on Saturday issued two separate advisories to West Bengal — first on rising incidents of political violence that have claimed 26 lives so far this year and the second on the ongoing strike by doctors in West Bengal — and sought a report from the state on correctives on both counts.

Quoting reports received by it, the home ministry said the number of incidents of political violence in West Bengal increased from 509 in 2016 to 1,035 in 2018 while 773 incidents have already occurred in 2019 till date. Correspondingly, the death toll rose from 36 in 2016 to 96 in 2018 while 26 deaths have already taken place so far this year.

The Centre’s advisory coincided with governor Keshari Nath Tripathi writing to chief minister Mamata Banerjee a second time, urging her to talk to striking doctors and provide adequate security.

Stating that the “unabated violence (in West Bengal) over the years is evidently a matter of deep concern,” the advisory said “the continued trend of political violence from 2016 through 2019, as evident from the above figures, is indicative of the failure on the part of the law enforcement machinery of the state to maintain the rule of law and to inspire a sense of security among the people”

The advisory — which came close on the heels of a similar advisory sent to the state on June 9 —sought a report from West Bengal government on measures taken to contain political violence, investigate such incidents and bring culprits to book.

Banerjee reacted strongly to the advisory. “Ask those who sent the advisory to look after the country. Law and order is a state subject. How many people have been killed in Yogi’s Uttar Pradesh or in Gujarat? Let them first send advisories to UP and Gujarat,” she said.

Meanwhile a second advisory from MHA to West Bengal state government on Saturday raised the ongoing strike by doctors and sought a report urgently. It stated: “This ministry is in receipt of a number of representations from doctors, health care professionals and medical associations from different parts of country for their safety and security in view of the ongoing strike by doctors in West Bengal. It is requested that a detailed report be sent urgently on the representations and ongoing strike by the doctors.”

Tripathi had tried to get in touch with Banerjee on Friday to discuss how to break the stalemate but the meeting did not occur because the latter was in Bijpur on Friday afternoon. “I have spoken to the governor over the steps the government has taken. He is convinced,” the CM said on Saturday, indicating that the governor was on the same page with her on the issue.
