LUCKNOW: Not even 10% of Lucknow University (LU) colleges have accreditation from the National Assessment Accreditation Council (NAAC), which determines quality and excellence in higher education.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made it mandatory for all universities and colleges to be certified by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). But only 12 out of 170 LU-affiliated colleges are NAAC graded, of which grades of four colleges have expired. Without NAAC accreditation, colleges are not eligible for grants from UGC, Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan and higher education department.

While LU has started the process to apply for NAAC re-accreditation, around 90% of colleges have never applied for the assessment. In the list of 12 NAAC-graded colleges, only Shri Jai Narai PG College and Rajat Girl’s Degree College have an ‘A’ grade at present.

As the grades of four colleges National PG College, Lucknow Christian College, AP Sen Girl’s Memorial College and Bappa Shri Narain Vocation PG College have expired, there are only eight colleges which have NAAC grade at present. Isabella Thoburn College and Navyug Kanya Mahavidyalaya have a B++ grade, while Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Girl’s College and RKG College have a B grade. Kalicharan Degree College has a ‘C’ grade.

Only two colleges with expired grades will apply for re-accreditation, while others said lack of financial crisis is the reason behind not going for the re-evaluation.

“Our college doesn’t have required infrastructure like an auditorium, a computer laboratory and a digitized library which carries considerable marks in NAAC evaluation,” said Shivani Dubey, principal of AP Sen Memorial Girl’s Degree College. She said the college has financial constraints and is not able to make the facilities available. There is no point of going for NAAC re-accreditation without meeting these set criterion, she said.

Lucknow Christian College is also not going for re-accreditation for the same reason, while National PG College and BSNV have begun its NAAC re-accreditation process.
