MANIPAL: Manipal University is set to go several notches higher and hopefully figure count among the best universities in the world. This is the goal new Vice Chancellor Dr H Vinod Bhat has set for himself. During the acceptance speech at a function to felicitate outgoing Vice Chancellor Dr K Ramnarayan and to welcome him as new VC here on Wednesday, Dr Bhat said, "I set myself a target of breaking into the (Quacquarelli Symonds) QS 200 World Ranking by 2020".
Briefly, Dr Bhat gave the roadmap for the progress to be made during the next five years that he will be in the Vice Chancellor's chair."In the last seven years, we have been at our productive best. We have set up 16 departments and started close to 100 different programmes and the student intake has gone up considerably. This momentum has to continue. And, I set myself a target of setting up 100 new departments in the next five years," Dr Bhat asserted.
"It is time for us to rededicate ourselves to a larger national cause. We represent the best of higher education in India and we need to expand both within and in the neighbourhood. We need to be empathetic towards our students and patients who continue to be our primary stakeholders. The University has come this far with overarching support of MAHE Trust and university Board, the vision and ideas of Dr Ramdas Pai (Chancellor) and all authorities," Dr Bhat said. Dr Ballal described Dr Ramnarayan as the "Man on the move". "He has done a lot of innovation, like academic activities, functioning of board of studies, academic senate and others. Our university was nowhere in BRICS rankings. He was responsible for the rise of the university. We figured in the BRICS ranking - was 100th and then moved to the 85th position the very next year. Dr Ballal also welcomed the new VC Dr Bhat and lauded his administrative skills.
Dr Ramnarayan, redesignated vice-president, faculty development and alumni relations, Manipal University was felicitated for his services as VC for five years from May 2010. Dr Ullas Kamath, Dean, MMMC, Manipal, Dr Dilip Naik, MCODS, Mangaluru and Dr Harishchandra Hebbar, director SOIS, Manipal, and Pro Chancellor Dr H S Ballal shared their thoughts. Dr Ramdas Pai handed over the citation and Dr Ranjan Pai, MD-cum-CEO of MEMG a memento.
