The Centre told the Supreme Court on Friday that it would allow students aspiring to join medical courses to take the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in Urdu but it was not possible to permit them this year as all preparations had been made.
Appearing before a bench of Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice R Banumathi, solicitor general Ranjit Kumar said the government is ready to consider to allow students to take the test in Urdu. “We can do it from next year but it is difficult to do it this year. We cannot put the clock back as preparations have been made for the exam to be held in May ,“ he said.
The Centre was responding to the apex court's order seeking explanation why Urdu was left out as a medium of examination when students are allowed to appear in eight regional languages.. The court was hearing a plea filed by Student Islamic Organisation seeking its direction to the government to prepare question papers also in Urdu for the benefit of Urdu-speaking students to take the test in their language. Some medical aspirants have also filed petition on the issue.
