This coming week, city police commissioner S George will have to appear before the Madras high court in person not once, but twice.A day after Justice N Kirubakaran summoned George to court on March 22 in connection with a contempt of court case, it has now emerged that another judge had already directed the commissioner to appear in person on March 20.
Justice S Vaidyanathan had summoned George for his failure to comply with an August 22, 2016, order directing the officer to furnish a status report of cases pending before the Central Crime Branch (CCB) up to 2011. The report was to have been sent to the registrar general of the Madras high court.
Justice Vaidyanathan called for details of pending cases, after he was informed that investigation had not been completed and chargesheets not filed in a large number of cases, including those dealt with by the CCB, and that they were all lying in cold stora ge for want of attention.
The judge had made it clear that if the report was not filed in the required format, the commissioner would have to appear before the bench for giving an explanation verbally and in writing thereafter.
Despite the ruling, till date, the report as called for by the high court had not been submitted and hence Justice Vaidyanathan summoned the commissioner to be present in person in court on March 20.
