Punjab's cotton belt or the Malwa region is often called India's cancer capital given the high incidence of the killer disease here. It is, therefore, not surprising that the boy who topped National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), 2017 on Friday wants to spend the rest of his life fighting cancer.

Son of a village school principal, Navdeep Singh comes from Muktsar's Charewan village which is right in the heart of the cancer belt. He scored 697 marks out of 720. “I want to do research in cancer and help find a cure,“ he told TOI after the results were declared. For the past few months, he studied 15 hours every day . He is now elated that his hard work has brought him closer to living his dream of defeating the emperor of maladies.

“I knew I would get a respectable rank, but topping the national test is a big moment for me and my family . I am speechless,“ said Navdeep, whose father Gopal Singh is the principal of the school at Charewan. His mother Simar jeet Kaur works with Life Insurance Corporation (LIC).Navdeep was coached at a private institute in Chandigarh though he completed his schooling from Muktsar.

In fact, 2017 has been a bonanza for students from Punjab and Haryana as five of them have made it to the top 25 in the merit list. Besides Navdeep, Nikita Goyal of Bathinda, again from Malwa, ranked 8 all India by scoring 690. Now, both of them are aiming for an admission to the Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi. Nikita had stopped using her smartphone for two years while preparing for NEET. “I had a mission to clear the MBBS entrance test in the top 10 positions and for that, I left my phone for two years,“ she said. Her mother supported her all the way . “She accompanied me all the time and did not attend any party or function. It is because of her, my father and teachers that I scored well,“ said Nikita, who wants to pursue neuroscience.

Tanish Bansal, another student from Punjab, ranked10 all India with 686 marks. Two students from Haryana also made it to top 25 list shared by the CBSE.
