Govt to woo Google CEO Sundar Pichai to open
centre in TN
Chennai:

The Tamil Nadu government is trying to woo Google CEO Sundar Pichai to request him to help set up a centre of the tech giant in the state. This was disclosed by information technology minister M Manikandan.“I am holding talks with Pichai and want him to announce a big Google centre in Tamil Nadu -either in Madurai or down south,“ said Manikandan. The minister said he was ready to meet Pichai anywhere. “Whether it is in the U.S. or Singapore, I am ready to hold talks with him.“
The issue figured in the state assembly when DMK member and senior leader I Periasamy flayed the state government for not according Pichai a warm welcome when he visited Tamil Nadu in December 2015.
Delivering his statement during a debate on the demand for grants for industries department, Periasamy said, “Pichai, who is a son of the soil, is the CEO of a global company like Google. He visited his school on the IITM campus in December 2015. The Tamil Nadu government did not even welcome him. What was worse, not even a tahsildar was sent to greet him.“ Periasamy wondered how Tamil Nadu could attract investments if the government did not give due respect to such industry leaders, who were sons of the soil.
Reacting to the charge, finance minister D Jayakumar said that it was a private visit and they did not have any information about it. “Jayalalithaa had invited several global CEOs and held talks. If we had information about Pichai's visit, we would have held talks with him,“ said Jayakumar.
Pichai visited his alma mater during a private visit to meet his parents, who live in Chennai.
