Centre seeks info from state on site for AIIMS

The Union government has sought additional information on the possible sites for an AIIMSlike institute in the state, the government told the assembly on Friday . Collectors of the five districts proposed for possible locations -Thanjavur, Madurai, Pudukkottai, Erode and Kancheepuram -have been told to provide information.After question hour ended, DMK leader M K Stalin raised the issue and said it had become a controversy to find the ideal location for setting up the premier institute. “Protests and rallies take place in Thanjavur and Madurai, and even MLAs took part in the agitation.When the issue was last raised, the chief minister said the Union government will decide on it. In the meantime, the ministry has said the state could do so,“ the DMK leader said, seeking to know if any district had been chosen for the purpose by the Edappadi K Palaniswami government.
Responding to the query , health minister C Vijayabaskar said the state government had received a letter from the Centre on May 24, seeking specific details about the availability of schools, colleges and universities. It had also enquired about the professional courses being offered, employment opportunities for the families and industrial and commercial activities in the city to determine the availability of jobs. The district collectors have been directed to provide the details by the health secretary . “We have told them not to omit anything. The state is very careful about merits and demerits,“ he said.
The Union health ministry on Thursday told the Madurai bench of the Madras high court that it was waiting for the TN government's response to its plan.On a petition to set up the institution in Madurai, an under-secretary from the ministry informed the high court bench that about 200 acres of land was required to set up an AIIMS type superspecialty hospital-cumteaching institution.
The sites should have proper road connectivity, and availability of water and electricity. The state government has selected the appropriate place as per the criteria and communicated it to the Union health ministry.
