The first day of the TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission) general counselling round saw a turnout of 81.75% with 2,329 out of the 2,898 students called for counselling taking part. A number of top rank holders who received their enrollments on Sunday at Anna University said they would be giving the highly-anticipated medical counselling a miss, hinting that fewer students than anticipated may migrate from their allotments here to medical colleges.Of the 162 top rankers, 116 turned up for the counselling, said registrar S.Ganesan.
Sessions that started in the morning saw students thronging to computer science (434 enrollments), electronics and communication (625) and mechanical engineering (403) in particular. With a TNEA rank of 26, G Hema from Madurai said she had opted for the ECE programme, along with nearly half the students ranked in the top 20. She was also one of the handful of toppers who had written NEET. “I scored 330, but if I don't get a government college seat, I will continue with engineering,“ she said, echoing the thoughts of several other students. Private colleges are expensive, so a government medical college is my only option besides this,“ said Arshath, who secured TNEA rank 7.
Aslew of measures were also announced by higher education secretary Sunil Paliwal including the limiting of the arrear-clearing window to three years for all Anna University students. Another measure being contemplated for all 500 affiliated colleges is to ensure that exam dates prescribed by the university are not circumvented by colleges. The university affiliation scores of institutions would be lowered in case of tampering with the dates and not sticking to the aca demic exam schedule, he said.
The day spanned six ses sions in all, with parents and students from across the state thronging the campus. Be sides a step-up in general facil ities including seating arrangements and guidance boards, 10 bank counters were also set up for students by the university for education loan purposes.
