Sathyabama University declares holiday till January 2

Chennai: Following the unrest on Wednesday wherein students of Sathyabama University indulged in arson after a first year student committed suicide, the college management has declared holiday until January 2.
A spokesperson for the college told that the declared semester holidays were from December 2 till January 3 and they have advanced the holidays by a week.
The students were asked to vacate the hostel on Thursday. “The remaining exams would be conducted in January,” the spokesperson said.
A first year student, Raga Monika Reddy (18) committed suicide in her hostel room allegedly after a college staff humiliated her. She was earlier caught indulging in malpractice during the semester examinations. A dejected Raga Monika sent a text to her twin brother, Rakesh who was also a student in the same department as her and hung herself.
After learning of her death, college students went on a rampage damaging hostel property and set it on fire. A posse of police personnel had to be deployed at the university to prevent any untoward incident. Meanwhile, on Thursday, the teenager’s family members reached the city and received the body after autopsy at the Government Royapettah Hospital. The girl’s father, Raja Reddy, filed a complaint against the college management with the Semmenchery police. Police said that no students have been booked so far for the arson.
