UGC asks Karunya University to discontinue off-campus courses

‘‘Courses offered in such centres will not be recognised’

University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed Karunya University to discontinue its off-campus centres and courses that it runs without approval. It has also told the university that courses offered in such centres will not be recognised.
In its letter dated October 10, 2017, the UGC said that institutions placed under ‘B’ category like Karunya University could not expand their activities.
Expansion
The expansion included starting new centres, departments, courses, off-campus, etc. The UGC could permit such expansion after its review exercise was over and the continuation of deemed university status was agreed by UGC Expert Committee. The university had deemed to be university status for three years from June 2004 to June 2007 and further continuation was yet to be granted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
In view of the facts, “you [Karunya University] are hereby directed to immediately discontinue the centre(s) and courses started without the approval of the UGC.
“Degrees awarded by the deemed to be university to the students studying in such centres and courses will not be treated as valid by the UGC for the purpose of higher studies and employment.”
