Bus fare hike: Suburban trains earn Rs 2 crore more

CHENNAI: With over 5 lakh passengers shifting their loyalty from buses to local trains, the Chennai division of Southern Railway has earned Rs 2.14 crore more revenue, thanks to bus fare hike.
According to a Southern Railway data, 73,93,154 passengers had travelled with non-season tickets during January 21 to 31 against 68,86,743 during the previous year. From the increased sales of non-season tickets, the Chennai division had earned Rs 1.93 crore more, suggests the data.
Meanwhile, 6,24,700 new passengers bought season tickets, generating revenue of more than `2.53 crore, which is `21.44 lakh higher than the previous year.The zonal railway also said that the Chennai division has been running 23 suburban special trains. Furthermore, a 12 car EMU rake is also being introduced in MMC - Arakkonam section to ease the congestion in trains, the zonal railway added.
