File report on suicides over NEET: HC to govt

The Madras high court on Thursday directed the state government to file a report on the suicides committed by students who failed to clear NEET exam and the compensation provided to their families.

“Students life is precious, and counselling should be provided to such students in all the schools,” Justice N Kirubakaran said. The judge passed the order on the contempt plea moved by advocate A P Suryaprakasam seeking contempt action against the school education authorities for failing to implement the court’s earlier order and take steps to prevent such suicides.

When the plea came up for hearing, the advocate submitted that the authorities have failed to provide proper guidance and counselling to the students as directed by the court.

He wanted the court to direct the authorities to provide adequate compensation to families of three students – Rithu, Vaishya and Monisha – who allegedly committed suicide as they failed to clear NEET.

Recording the submission, the court passed the interim order and adjourned the hearing after two weeks.

In an earlier hearing, the court observed that the government alone could not be faulted for students, who failed to clear exams like the NEET, committing suicide. The other stakeholders, particularly the parents, who put enormous pressure on the children to score high marks in exams, were also to be blamed, the judge said.

In its oral observations, the court also asked the politicians not to glorify or give political colour to cases of suicide by those who failed to clear NEET.

The petitioner said in spite of specific directions to the government to give counselling to those children and parents, who have been frustrated owing to the "unreasonable deprivation" of medical education to the poor and rural students by the introduction of the NEET, the authorities had failed to follow the directions.
