Chennai:18.06.2019

To deter reckless driving, an amicus curiae appointed by the Madras high court on Monday suggested enhancement of imprisonment for death caused through such offences from 2 to 10 years by amending the IPC.

The amicus has also suggested that the state establish a 24/7 CCTV control room to track and monitor such offenders and directly alert traffic police.

The suggestions were made on the suo motu plea initiated by the high court. Justice N Anand Venkatesh initiated the proceeding a day after one such accident caused by a reckless driver in Selaiyur on June 8 injuring 4 victims.

When the plea came up for hesring, the amicus also highlighted that there is very lethargic prosecution by police under the Motor Vehicles Act for licence less driving, speeding, reckless traffic violations, helmet-less riding, minors at the wheel, uninsured vehicles, drunken driving and many more such violations.

There must be strict enforcement by police/ transport authorities and prosecution must be in place under all provisions and not be ignored, he added.

Recording the submissions, the judge directed the government to take note of the submissions/suggestions and submit their response.

The judge then adjourned the hearing to July 1for the state to files its reply.
