IRT Medical College plans to increase number of hostel rooms for girls

Owing to higher proportion of girl students gaining admission over the years by virtue of scoring high marks, the IRT Medical College, Perundurai, has contemplated having an additional block for girls’ hostel.

The boy-girl ratio was currently 35:65 for the 60 seats for each year. During the early nineties when the hostels were constructed, the admission trend used to be the other way about.

There are now two blocks for boys and one for girls.

The idea of the college authorities is to convert the boys hostel into girls’ hostel and vice-versa.

The toilets will have to be replaced accordingly.

Measures were being taken to secure necessary approval for completion of the work before admitting students for the current academic year, said College Dean M. Rajendran.

Scope for utilising funds earmarked for renovation of hospital toilets for setting right toilets in the hostels would be explored, he said.

In the first year, three students share a room, and in the second year, a room is provided for two students. In the third year, each student occupies a room, and in the subsequent year, a single room with attached toilet is provided for every student.

Every year, girls have been faring well, scoring the necessary cut-off. Last year, the cut-off was 198.5 for forward caste, 197.75 for BC, 194 for MBC, and 188 to 190 for SC/ST.

Having applied for increase in intake from 60 to 100 students, the college authorities were keen to set right the hostels at the earliest possible.

In all likelihood, the intake would increase for admissions next year, the Dean said.

Though the college had applied for increasing student strength in 2010, there has been progress in the proposal only in recent months.

The college is confident about securing approval of Medical Council of India before completion of this academic year.
