MK University campus to become Wi-Fi-enabled
The sprawling 400-plus acre campus of Madurai Kamaraj University will completely be made Wi-Fi enabled with Rs. 2.98 crore funding through the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) of Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The project will be part of a slew of initiatives to be undertaken by the university with around Rs. 10 crore funding sanctioned so far for Madurai Kamaraj University under the RUSA scheme, started in 2013 with a key objective of infrastructural improvement in higher education institutions.
G. Arumugam, Registrar (in-charge), said that necessary approvals had been obtained and the orders related to commencing the work would be issued soon.
K. Ravichandran, Special Officer, said that MKU would likely be the first State university in Tamil Nadu to enable Wi-Fi connectivity throughout its campus.
“The work, expected to be over in six months, will be executed in a phased manner,” he said.
Other key projects include library automation at a cost of Rs. 60 lakh, upgrading computers to high-end hardware (Rs. 1.46 Crore), a 400-metre athletic track (Rs. 31 lakh), rainwater harvesting facilities in all buildings (Rs. 95 lakh) and modernisation of hostel kitchens (Rs. 74.9 lakh).
Mr. Arumugam said that a fitness centre would also be constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.15 crore with funds received from University Grants Commission.
