HC mulls stringent dress code in colleges

Madurai: A deviant student's act of uploading his selfies with girls and other obscene visuals on social media platforms using his mobile phone, may invite a stricter dress code and restrictions on mobile phone, while on educational institution campuses. Madras high court is likely to frame a set of guidelines on this issue on November 20.

Justice R Mahadevan of Madras high court mulled the options, after a Karur district-based college administration furnished the visuals uploaded by one of their students on websites. The student had pornographic materials and photographs with girls in the institution, and he had uploaded them without their knowledge.

On coming to know of his deviant behaviour, the college punished him severely and refused to return his testimonials.

The issue came to light after the student dragged the college to court by filing a writ petition stating that when he wanted to join another college, the management refused to to give him his original Classes 10 and 12 educational certificates, community certificate and transfer certificate.

He took the matter to Anna University's knowledge by a complaint on July 11, asking it to direct the college to provide him his certificates, But, the university failed to act on the representation, he said, adding that the court should direct the university to take action against correspondent and principal of the college and to return his original certificates.

Responding to his allegations, counsel for the college furnished photographs pertaining to the behaviour of the student while in college.

Expressing concern at the trend, justice Mahadevan directed the student to appear before him on November 20, when he is expected to pass necessary orders. He disapproved of the student community's behaviour and said the court thought of bringing in a dress code and cell phone restriction on campuses.
