Second such occurence in Tamil Nadu history

Bharathiar University Vice Chancellor A. Ganapathi, who was arrested on Saturday on corruption charges, was suspended by Governor-Chancellor Banwarilal Purohit on Tuesday evening. He is the second serving Vice Chancellor of a State university to be suspended in the history of Tamil Nadu.

Following his suspension, Higher Education Minister K. P. Anbalagan told The Hindu that a committee would soon be constituted to run the the university in Coimbatore. “Vice Chancellors are appointed by the Governor in his capacity as Chancellor. Hence, we sent a report to the Raj Bhavan,” Mr. Anbalagan said.

Mr. Ganapathi was arrested by officers of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption while allegedly accepting Rs. 1 lakh in cash and Rs. 29 lakh by means of post-dated cheques from an assistant professor, T. Suresh, for regularising his appointment. He is presently in judicial custody.

Noting that the charges against the accused academic “are serious in nature”, the Governor, exercising his inherent powers as Chancellor, decided to place Mr. Ganapathi under suspension with effect from Tuesday. “The suspension will continue until further orders,” R. Rajagopal, Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor, said in an official release.

In 2009, the Vice Chancellor of the erstwhile Anna University of Technology (AUT Coimbatore) R. Radhakrishnan was placed under suspension on corruption charges. He was convicted by a trial court and sentenced to five years imprisonment. The Madras High Court recently upheld the trial court’s order.

Bail plea adjourned

The Special Court for Prevention of Corruption Act cases on Tuesday adjourned hearing on the the bail plea submitted by Ganapathi and N. Dharmaraj, Professor with Department of Chemistry at Bharathiar University, to Thursday.

The hearing was adjourned after the court accepted the plea of the prosecution seeking additional time for investigation. The prosecution submitted that the investigation is at the preliminary stage and various details pertaining to allegations levelled against the accused are being collected and corroborated.
