Come April 2020 your motorcycle and scooter will load in a bouquet of tech inputs which will come at a price cost of around ₹7,000-9,000.

According to top automobile technology vendors, the new-age bike or scooter will pack in tech solutions like integrated fuel injection and ABS along with technologies like the MSC, a technology that will make it easier and safer to drive sharp bends for example.

These tech tweaks will be over and above what the regulations mandate including safety, emissions and load factors.

“Our focus has been to introduce technology at affordable prices and one of the options we’re offering is a highly integrated solution for fuel injection and antilock braking system which will get into production midnext year into production,” said Soorajith Radhakrishnan, country head of powertrain division, Continental Automotive India.

Sources say nearly all local two wheeler companies (except the Japanese brands like Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha) have shown interest to introduce this technology.

Tier-1 tech vendor Bosch too is looking at newer technologies to introduce post April 2020. “Obviously the immediate technology upgrade will be around BS6 and the powertrain as the carburetor is replaced by an electronic management system and ABS is introduced. But beyond these, the next thing we can expect to come to India is the ESP (electronic stability programme) of the motorcycle which will help you drive with control braking on front and rear wheels even in bends and name of the technology is MSC (motorcycle stability control),” said Jan-Oliver Roehrl, CTO, Bosch.

Bosch has also showcased an emergency call solution for motorcycles for accident help and are talking to “a number of Indian OEMs” about this technology.

Of course companies like Bosch and Continental are already active on the emission side as well and investing heavily on localization in India.

“Right now we are active in after treatments in terms of tail pipe emission control in two wheelers and adding capacity in our Pune plant. In 12-18 months, the industry will shift to BS6 which will bring a lot of electronic technology into two wheelers which is relatively low right now. Continental is adding a lot of capacity into bringing this electronic side in Bengaluru and Manesar. ABS and braking will be coming in next month and we are expanding capacity on that and also on electronic fuel injection,” said Radhakrishnan. All the tech load up will lead to input costs going up by ₹7,000-₹9,000 per two wheeler on a net-to-net basis, he added.

Continental is also in discussions with “all big OEMs for electrification and automated driving which will happen in next 12-18 months,” added Radhakrishnan.

“A lot of two wheeler customers are looking to get more active in electric we have seen a lot of interest in the last 12 months from the electric two wheeler space. We are still evaluating our decision to get into battery space and we will take a call by 2020,” he said.
