A woman whose navel was “sunk” in a weight-loss surgery in Ahmedabad stands to receive ₹2 lakh in compensation.

A consumer court has ordered the surgeon to pay for the unsolicited cover-up. The complainant, Alpaben Goraniya, 43 — a Porbandar resident — sued Dr Vishal Patel for removing her navel without her consent and for the “belly-flopping” of the surgery. She says she couldn’t stomach the fact that she gained weight after the tummy tuck procedure.

Goraniya had checked into Patel’s clinic in Ahmedabad seeking a cure for rashes on her neck. In her petition, Goraniya stated that as she was overweight, the doctor persuaded her to undergo surgery that would help her shed 35kg and bring her back into shape.

On October 20, 2013, Goraniya underwent an abdominoplasty and Patel removed excessive fat from her abdomen. Regular follow-ups ensued over the next two years but she began to feel that she did not have even a slim chance of benefiting. “I found myself in a pitiable condition as my belly button had disappeared after the surgery,” Goraniya stated in her petition.
