The vice-chancellor of the National Law University in Jabalpur is now staying in the “haunted” hostel room in which a student committed suicide about a month ago to ward off ghost phobia among rattled boarders.
On September 9, 18-yearold Gagan Bhunderkar, a BA-LLB (honours) fresher, was found hanging in his room. The students believe the hostel has been haunted after the incident.
A native of Maoist-affected Balaghat district, Gagan had worked up the hard way to land a berth at the premiere institute. But he “felt like an outcast” among his classmates because of his poor knowledge of English, which led him into depression, initial police investigation has revealed. He was taking tuitions to improve his command over the language but after attempting his English test on September 9, he went to his room and hanged himself. He was dead by the time his roommate arrived.
Within hours of the suicide, his roommate shifted to the ground floor. Soon, rumours spread that Room 233 — where Gagan lived — was ‘haunted.’ Many students living on that floor went home while others moved into rooms on other floors. Every bump and every creak of a door “got amplified.” Within a couple of days, the second floor was completely abandoned, sources said.
It was then that VC Balraj Chouhan decided to stay in Gagan’s room. “What happened is very unfortunate. I decided to keep that room with me for this semester and I will go there and spend time whenever I feel like,” Chouhan told TOI.
Explaining why he decided to play ghostbuster, Prof Chouhan said: “Living in this hostel room, I can communicate better with students. It will help them overcome their phobia. I have decided, I will spend the maximum time in this room.”
