Expresses shock over replacement of documents at Sub-Registrar offices

Expressing shock over documents related to 9.63 acres of government land at Chemmanchery, near here, having been replaced at the sub-registrar’s office with fake documents to enable transfer of the ownership of property to private individuals, the Madras High Court on Wednesday said: “Thus, it could be safely assumed that nobody’s property is safe.”

Justice N. Kirubakaran made the observation in an interim order. Last week he called for records related to 9.63 acres of land after advocate N. Suresh brought it to the notice of the court that many sub-registrar offices were following themodus operandi of replacing old documents with new ones on false claims that the former have been damaged.

Additional Advocate General C. Manishankar told the court on Wednesday that the land in question was indeed a government property.

The judge tasked the Inspector General of Registration to be present in the court on November 1.
