Healthcare sciences pupils can join BA, BSc

PANAJI: Based on the directives of Indian nursing council, the Goa board of secondary and higher secondary education and the Goa university have now allowed students of the vocational course healthcare sciences to seek admissions for the BA, BSc, BBA and Home Science degree courses after Class XII.

The healthcare sciences vocational course at +2 level was introduced as a need was felt for skilled workforce in the field of healthcare services.

The course was aimed at creating a multi-skilled workforce for the growth of health industry by generating employability skills such as meticulous attention, comfortable use of equipment, interpersonal skills and patient dealing skills.

So it was now felt that students of this vocational course, which offers a range of exciting and challenging opportunities, should be provided vertical mobility.

Some of the subjects the students learn in the vocational course at Class XI and XII are biology; anatomy and physiology; food, nutrition and dietetics; hospital organization and services; health education, communication and public relations and public health.

Some of the other subjects are basic concepts of health and disease and medical terminology; and first aid and emergency medical care, etc.

"The students who pass their higher secondary examinations of Goa board with vocational course 'health care assistant' with changed nomenclature as 'healthcare sciences' have been granted vertical mobility and are eligible for admission to the BA/BSc/BBA/Home Science programme of the Goa university," the Goa board circular issued in February states.
