BENGALURU:As many as 26,252 students will receive degrees at the 17th annual convocation of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) on Wednesday.
Former director of ISRO Dr K Radhakrishnan will deliver the convocation address while Governor Vajubhai Vala and Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil will be present.
This time, the varsity will award honorary doctorates to three people.
Dr C Vittal, surgeon and former medical superintendent of Victoria Hospital, Bengaluru; Dr M Gurappa, heart surgeon and former director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardio Vascular Sciences; and Dr N Rajiv Shetty, former director of medical education, will be conferred the honorary doctorates.
RGUHS Vice-Chancellor Dr K S Ravindranath told reporters that all universities in the state had decided on a ceiling of only three honorary doctorates.
This year, over 56 students are sharing 87 gold medals. Dr Mangala Gowri K of Bangalore Medical College and Dr Rozar Lusi Long of the College of Dental Sciences, Davanagere, will receive five gold medals each.
Dr Vijeta Vittalrai Rane of S Nijalingappa Medical College, Bagalkot, and Dr Nikita K Jain of MS Ramaiah Medical College, Bengaluru will receive four gold medals each.
To a query on why the registrar has not been changed yet, Ravindranath said, “The registrar (administration) should be either an IAS or a super time scale KAS officer. We have sent requests to the government, but they said that as there is a shortage of IAS officers, they will soon depute one super time scale KAS officer.”
On the allegation that the son of former V-C Sriprakash was allowed to write examinations despite attendance shortage, Ravindranath said if the police inquiry proves there was shortage of attendance, the degree will be withdrawn.
Digital Evaluation
Taking note of criticism of the evaluation system, RGUHS has decided to go for digital evaluation from this academic year. The vice-chancellor said, “From June 2015, we will go for digital evaluation and we are calling a tender soon for this purpose.”
The university is also spending Rs 1 crore each on strengthening regional centres.
University’s issues
■ The long-pending auditing of the university (for four years) is being done and will be submitted to the government soon
■ Notices have been sent to those colleges which have not paid the affiliation and examination fee
■ Negative endorsement was given for nursing and pharmacy colleges which have not followed rules while admitting students
■ Inquiries on recent marks card scams are still with the Central Crime Branch
■ PhD students will not be awarded degrees on stage during the convocation due to shortage of time
