Seven visually challenged students among graduates from SRM univ

From a self-doubting student to a confident teacher, M Mahendran has come a long way to overcome hurdles he faced due to visual impairment. A postgraduate in education, Mahendran will be among the seven visually challenged graduates of SRM School of Teacher Education and Research who receive degrees at their convocation on Tuesday .

Mahendran recalls how he had taken up the MEd course with numerous doubts about his choice of pursuing it in a private university.

“I had studied in government schools and colleges until I took up the PG course so I was very apprehensive,“ he said. But Mahendran's perseverance helped him clear the Teachers Entrance Test and bag a teaching position in a school in Raghunathapuram just months after he graduated in May 2014. “My students were unused to having a visually impaired person teach them but now they understand that I can help them learn,“ he said.

The university has admitted 126 visually impaired students free of cost. They were among the 14,000 students, including 165 rank holders of various branches and first batch of 46 PG medical students, to receive their undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees at the 10th convocation from the Union Minister for Science and Technology , Harsh Vardhan.

The university has no plans to introduce new courses, but they want to strengthen their research department. SRM University chancellor T R Pachamuthu said the government should not discriminate between government and private colleges in allocation research funds.
