COIMBATORE: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has drawn up a common admission schedule for postgraduate medical and dental courses based on a Supreme Court order, according to which classes should begin on May 30. The court has accepted the schedule.

The Supreme Court had given directions in this regard to the MCI and and the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) while hearing a petition seeking a schedule for all-India and state counselling for admissions to postgraduate medical and dental courses for the 2015-16 academic year.

According to the MCI schedule, the first round of counselling for the all-India quota should be held between March 1 and 4 and state quota counselling completed by April 5.

The second round for the all-India quota should be between April 10 and 16 and for state quota between April 29 and May 3.

The third round for the all-India quota should be between May 9 and 19 and for state quota between May 31 and June 4.

The classes should commence from May 30.

The Supreme Court directed all states to implement the schedule in letter and spirit. It also said that it was time for the MCI and DGHS to frame the 2016-17 schedule. A specific schedule should be followed so that such controversies do not reach the court every year. “All the states are bound to cooperate with the aforesaid authorities, failing which serious view shall be taken,” the court said.

In view of the Supreme Court order, MCI Secretary Reena Nayyar has asked state health secretaries and directors of medical education and deans of medical colleges to strictly follow the schedule.
