Vice-Chancellors discuss Choice Based Credit System

Vice-Chancellors of Universities from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala and Principals of Community colleges held deliberations on adoption of Choice Based Credit System and Credit Framework for Skill Based Vocational courses at a workshop in Pondicherry University on Friday.

Speaking at the workshop, H. Devaraj, Vice-Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) said that UGC was keen on bringing equity, efficiency and excellence in the Higher Education System.

He said that Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) provided an opportunity in which the students can take courses of their choice, learn at their own pace, undergo additional courses and acquire more credits and adopt an interdisciplinary approach to learning.

He said that CBCS had already been implemented by several Universities in the country. The method for computing the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), based on the performance of students in the examinations, has been brought in for achieving uniformity in grading system.

UGC had introduced a new set of guidelines to broad base CBCS so that the country can have a uniform policy of education.

The Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani wanted UGC officials to visit all states and hold discussions with Vice-Chancellors on adoption of CBCS and credit framework for skills. UGC will collect the feedback and arrive at a consensus.

Mr. Devaraj pointed out that the grading system was better than the conventional marking system. It will facilitate student mobility across countries and also enable potential employers to assess the performance of students.

Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor Chandra Krishnamurthy and S.S. Chahal, former VC of Punjab Agricultural University also spoke.
