Now, you can order food from Ola's updated app

BENGALURU: Taxi aggregator Ola has launched a food ordering service called Ola Cafe.

This looks similar to rival Uber's 'Fresh' lunch and dinner service that it started piloting in the US last year, and appears to be an effort to beat Uber to it in India.

Ola's website says the food it brings is handpicked from top-rated restaurants close to the customer's location. And it promises to make the delivery in less than 20 minutes. To get the option to use the service, you will first need to upgrade the Ola app to the latest version.

Once you do that, a 'Cafe' option appears alongside those little images of cars and autorickshaw on the bottom slider.

Press that and you can select your meal and quantity and place the order. The delivery person will call you once he is near your area to know the exact delivery point. The website says you can pay by either Ola Money or cash.

The service starts at 12 noon and provides a lunch service till 3 pm, followed by snacks between 3 pm and 7 pm, and dinner between 7 pm and 11 pm.

The website says the service is currently available in select parts of Mumbai, but the visuals it provides indicates also locations in Bengaluru.

A number of startups have entered the food service business, attracted by the growing number of office-goers who order lunch out, and the increasing trend of young families having little time to cook food at home and hence ordering dinner out. Ola has the advantage of having a ready-made logistics service. Whether it will use the same fleet of cars and autorickshaws to deliver food is not clear.
