Accountability and excellence would be the main focus of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in the next 15 years to ensure that colleges improved quality of education, said UGC Vice-Chairman H. Devaraj at the 57th College Day celebrations of Thiagarajar College of Engineering on Monday.
“The UGC wants to monitor its funds and ensure that people heading the education system across the country become more accountable and improve the overall quality of learning provided by developing their own branding committees. We need responsible and accountable teachers and most importantly, Vice-Chancellors who are visionary leaders,” he said.
Mr. Devaraj congratulated the management, faculty and students of the college and urged them to delve deep into their quest for excellence and said that good teachers would provide the foundation for that.
Medals and certificates were given to the best outgoing students from the college. B. Anantha Narayanan and R.A. Shanmathi were awarded the best outgoing student excellence awards for male and female students respectively.
Awards were also distributed to the department-wise achievers and NCC cadets, NSS volunteers and achievers in sports.
Speaking at the event, college chairman and correspondent Karumuttu T. Kannan asked the students to be engaged in a process of constant learning even after completing their education. “Graduating from college should not be seen as an end to education and it is important to keep oneself updated. Be a crusader and achiever in whatever small or large role you play in an organisation in the future,” he said.
