Blade left behind in lung during surgery, 2-yr-old dies

TIMES OF INDIA

New Delhi: A two-year-old child undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital for pus in the lung cavity died allegedly due to medical negligence.
The child's parents have complained to police that the surgeons who operated on her to take out the pus, left behind a surgical blade which led to complications and death.

TOI spoke to Dr A K Rai, medical superintendent of the hospital, who accepted that the surgical blade was left behind during the surgery. He, however, added that the surgeons informed the family about this and operated on her again to remove the blade.
"Despite the second surgery, the child's condition did not improve. We were investigating the cause of the infection, when the family left against medical advice with the patient. Later, we got to know that she had succumbed to the condition," the superintendent said.

The parents, residents of Wazirabad in northeast Delhi, have complained to police for action against the doctors. The complain is also being forwarded to the Medical Council of India (MCI) for necessary action.

"If the MCI finds the doctors guilty, suitable action will be taken," said one of the hospital authorities.
