20,000 students to get degrees at medical university convocation

CHENNAI: The state medical university will hold a convocation after nearly 20 months on December 3. The 28th convocation, to be held at the Centenary Auditorium, University of Madras, Chennai, will be for medical, dental and paramedical students of the 2015-16 batch.

As per the university's statutes, convocations should be held at least twice a year. After the last convocation on April 30, 2015, the one scheduled for November 2015 had to be postponed because of rain and floods. The newly built auditorium, which was inundated by water, had to be renovated. "We held special convocations to give away degrees to 20 students who needed the certificates immediately .For the rest, the degrees will be given in December," university registrar T Balasubramanian said.

Officials, in the absence of chief minister J Jayalalithaa, would invite Union health ministry director-general Jagdish Prasad. During the convocation, 20,489 students will be conferred degrees. At least 5,266 candidates will get their degrees in person and 15,233, in absentia. Tamil Nadu governor C Vidyasagar Rao will confer the honorary degree of doctor of science lifetime achievement award on senior doctors and give away 181gold and silver medals to 141 candidates in various courses in medical and paramedical disciplines.
