740 More Students In 95-100% Bracket Compared To Last Yr
The CBSE did not challenge the Delhi high court order on moderation, but did it abide by it in toto? The CBSE says `yes', but insiders in the system believe `not really'. in the system believe `not really'.The number of students who scored between 95% and 100% increased this year while that in the 90%-95% bracket dropped. Around 10,091 candidates figured in the 95%-100% category this year against the 9,351 last year. This year, the number of students in the 90%-95% category was 53,156 while in 2016 there were 54,036 students, a drop of 880 candidates.
The increase of 740 students in the top bracket is due to moderation, say CBSE sources. “This is sign that we have carried out moderation as per the orders of the Delhi court,“ said the source adding that the capping for moderation was kept at 95%.
However, people aware about developments said moderation was not more than four marks per paper this year. “We have awarded three to four marks more,“ said a source in the CBSE, an indication that the board has been stringent in awarding extra marks.
The increase in the number of students in the 95%-100% category also shows that it is a result of the students' efforts, said a principal of a CBSE school. “We are not aware how much was the moderation, but whatever might be the case, the scores are an outcome of the students' hard work,“ she said.
The rise in the number of students in the 95%-100% category will prove to be a positive for pupils in Tamil Nadu. Most professional colleges consider Class XII scores for merit-based admission.
Usually , CBSE candidates stand a disadvantage while seeking admissions to colleges in Tamil Nadu as the scores of students from the state board are higher. There is no normalisation of marks as it is opined that CBSE is a tougher board than the state board. While the admissions in most top arts and science colleges are over, CBSE students will have a nearly fair opportunity in the single window counseling of professional universities like Anna University and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University .
