Madurai Kamaraj Uni versity (MKU) has got a new vice-chancellor af ter two years but the appointment of its former director of youth welfare P P Chelladurai as its 16th VC has sparked a row owing to a three-year-old criminal case pending against him.In 2014, following a com plaint from MKU's retired Tamil professor A Srinivasan, police in Madurai had booked former VC of the varsity Kalyani Mathivanan, Chelladurai and others for voluntarily causing hurt and attempting to murder. Srinivasan had floated an organisation -`Save MKU Coalition' -to expose alleged irregularities in the var sity administration and was attacked by two people.
A resident of Virudhunagar, Chelladurai has a PhD in history and specialises in youth affairs. He has been a resource person for the ministry of parliamentary affairs for conducting model youth par liament too. But after his name was announced, posters surfaced in Madurai slamming the decision. “The chancellor's office and the government are aware of the case. On what basis was his name brought before the panel of three names?“ said Makkal Urimai Padhukappu Maiyam' representative and advocate S Vanchinathan.
“He is not qualified for the post. He made a backdoor entry and became the director of MKU's youth welfare. I had filed a case but [when] he retired from service due to the case became null and void,“ said former principal of Wakf Board College, I Ismail.
Dr Mu Ramaswamy , who resigned from the search committee constituted to recommend a panel of three names to the governor, said, “The governor failed to look into the allegations levelled against the committee's convener C Murukadas. I had sent letters but no action was taken.“
