The next time you're contemplating spicy Vanjaram fry for lunch, save yourself the trouble of haggling at the crowded fish market and head instead to http:www.meengal.com, the state government's unique virtual onestop-shop for fresh fish and seafood.Promoted by the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd, the online sale of fish and related food products was formally launched by fisheries minister D Jayakumar, at a function at Foreshore Estate.
According to the Fisheries Development Corporation, the state is home to various aquatic resources such as freshwater, brackish water, riverine stretches and cold water streams, which have the potential to yield 4.5 lakh metric tonnes of fish every year. The marine fisheries potential itself is estimated at 0.719 million tonnes from less than 50 metres of depth, and 0.35 million tonnes beyond it.
You could place your order on the website or call 24956896. “We have four main centres from where fish and other seafood will be distributed to different parts of the city,“ said a senior fisheries department official.
The price of the products has been fixed a little above the market rate. “We will be charging `35 for distribution if the delivery address is within 5km. Beyond that additional charges will be levied,“ said the official.
For city residents, this is a small price to pay for the convenience of the service. “The doorstep delivery at market rates is a great move by the government. It will save me time. Some private companies have started similar services but they remain expensive. Here, the costs are reasonable,“ said Rhitu Chatterjee, a resident of Perungudi.
