University of Madras on Monday announced an increase in the examination fee for both regular and distance education courses, for the first time in seven years.A decision to this effect was taken at the syndicate meeting, the first meeting chaired by newly-appointed vice-chancellor P Duraisamy . Higher sducation secretary Sunil Paliwal also attended the meeting.
For some courses the hike was as low as 1.4% but, for the majority , the increase was a hefty 30%.
Senior members of the university's syndicate said they had now brought the examination fees for many courses on the same level as the fee at Periyar University and Manonmanian Sundaranar University .
The cost of conducting the examinations has gone up due to various factors over the past few years, a syndicate member said, explaining the reason for the fee increase. This was a reform that was necessary to improve the financial condition of the university , the official said.
For instance, the examination fee for the BA (criminology) course in distance mode has gone up from `6,640 to `8,600. The exam fee for MBA courses has increased from `16,750 to `21,100. The PG diploma exam fee for some courses has been raised from `2,100 to `2,800. Only one syndicate member voiced dissent to the proposal, sources said.
During the six-hour meeting, Duraisamy also initiated discussions on making the plagiarism software compulsory before awarding PhD degrees.
Syndicate members also discussed specific guidelines for punishment for plagiarism. A member said students should upload their theses on the university website for public viewing.
The syndicate also discussed the qualifications and other specifics needed for appointment of a fulltime registrar, controller of examinations, director of Institute of Distance Education and dean of College Development Council.
